ETREMA Terfenol-D was developed by Naval Ordnance Laboratory. Until the 1980s, it was well developed.
The name follows as such:
- ETREMA：the maker's initial ( ETREMA Products, Inc. ) Edge Technologies' Rare Earth Magnetostrictive Alloys.
- Ter：Terbium (Tb)
- fe: Ferrum (Fe)
- nol: Naval Ordnance Laboratory
- D: Dysprosium
From its name, we can see that Terfenol-D is a Tb-Dy-Fe alloy, which consisted of "Tb0.27Dy0.73Fe1.9".
